Typography

 

In the books we read and on the websites we visit, the presence of typography is everywhere. The term is classed as the style or appearance of text. In the world of web design, this element is crucial in creating amazing visual effects, that customers can engage with and build a connection to. Having clear, well-spaced, and appropriate sized text enhances a user’s interest with a given website. The website must have striking, bold text on the front page, to help capture the attention of new customers, as first impressions are key. Many websites fail to exploit the benefit of bold text, by using small font sizes and low resolution qualities in the content. The web design typography must therefore be consistent, by helping build a cohesive and clear web experience.

Colour Theory

 

Colour plays a key role in the brand of a company and the appearance it wants to establish. Colours invoke moods and emotion in people. In web design this is especially relevant. People on average take 90 seconds to make a decision on how they feel about a website. With 60-90% of them basing their opinion on the colour alone, the web design aesthetic is crucial.

The colour of text and background serves to set the mood of the website and its brand. The key in creating effective web design is by consulting with the client on a particular colour schemes that supports their brand. For businesses, it’s customers will associate their goods or services in accordance with their brand and colour scheme. Great web design must therefore enable customers to make this connection as quickly and effortlessly as possible. The use of effective Colour Theory can be seen in social media, where many use only one or two different colours. For example, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter use only blue and white as their key colours to keep their brand identity simple and clear.

Layout and composition

 

Layout is the foundation of design, and is key in achieving intuitive online platforms. In web design, the structure can affect the time spent by customers on a website. Therefore, great web design will include a well composed layout. Clear separations between topics of text helps add value to the user by making the text seem more manageable to read. Websites are getting simpler and simpler. With intuition being at the heart of web design, the easier, clearer and quicker information can be understood by users the better.

More people are now accessing the internet through their phones, than desktops. Therefore, the importance of a sleek, cohesive and simple layout has never been so important. In addition to this good web design must include all key information within the first three swipes of a user scrolling through a website. Use of graphics and visuals will reduce the need for unnecessary text and serve to separate paragraphs of content well.

Communication

 

Finally, building and maintaining strong client relationships is critical in achieving the client brief. Successful web design is all about the quality of the communication between the client and web designer. Exploring and articulating properly with a client, is what sets apart one web designer from another. Taking a working problem, and assessing all different solutions is where the web design specification stems from. From there, communication is key in matching the clients input with the designer’s output. Understanding feedback and embracing criticism is a daily experience for a web designer. Great web design must have effective communication, with both parties find that common ground which will help achieve the goal. In web design, the quality of the communication will affect many variables. The estimated length of a project and indeed the cost to the client can be reduced heavily with quick and effective communication.
